I trained intensively in mediation for family law in 1989. I use all the skills that I acquired as a mediator in settlement negotiations in all of my cases. Although I am a skillful and tough litigator, I will prioritize your case over all other concerns in the office in the event that a reasonable and fair settlement is evolving. As I often tell my clients when I recommend a particular settlement: "I would rather you agree to give the money to the other side or compromise on this point than pay me more unreasonable attorney's fees. It is more cost effective this way."
That statement seems to encourage clients to look at possible settlement as a business decision, laying aside the emotional aspects that are attendant to every litigation case. My clients understand that in those situations, I am not "economically motivated" to settle (as I clearly make more money if litigation continues), but since I am their zealous representative, I want the best case scenario for them, which may not necessarily be a trial.
Protecting your rights and your budget
When you come into my office, you will see that the fees that you pay to me do not go in large part to the overhead of maintaining an excessively fancy law office. I do require a retainer in advance before I start any case. Thereafter, I work individually with all my clients on fees and costs and negotiate payment arrangements as needed.
The duty of confidentiality is paramount in my law office. Not only I, as your attorney, have a duty of confidentiality at all times, but that extends to my office staff, including, and most importantly, my paralegal Lera Jones.
